A hernia can occur in the body for any number of reasons.

Whether you’ve recently been lifting heavy weights on a regular basis or suffer from a chronic case of coughing, it’s possible for some internal tissues or organs to poke through outer areas and walls that they aren’t supposed to.

Among the more common yet least severe forms of a hernia is an umbilical hernia, which mainly takes place in infants and premature babies. With the details of an umbilical hernia in hand, you can obtain the proper treatment that will get rid of the hernia for good.

Minimally Invasive Hiatal Hernia Repair

This is a type of hernia that causes a small portion of the intestine to stick out of the abdominal wall in the area where the umbilical cord passed at birth, which is right around the belly button. This is a very common form of a hernia that’s relatively harmless and usually doesn’t display any symptoms. While this form of hernia typically occurs in infants, it can also develop in an adult. If you find that your child has developed an umbilical hernia during infancy, keep in mind that the hernia should disappear within the first two years of life. However, it’s possible for the hernia to remain open until the child has reached the age of five. Surgery may be necessary among adults who suffer from this hernia.

Symptoms of An Umbilical Hernia

Whether a child or adult suffers from an umbilical hernia, the main symptom will involve a bulging or swelling around the navel. For babies, this swelling may only be visible when the baby coughs, cries, or strains. When a child suffers from this condition, it’s unlikely that they will experience any notable symptoms, which is why treatment may be unnecessary. Adults who suffer from an umbilical hernia could experience some discomfort in and around the abdomen.

Causes and Risk Factors of This Hernia

During the gestation period that occurs between conception and birth, an umbilical cord will naturally pass through a baby’s abdominal muscles. This opening should close soon after the birth has occurred. However, there are times when the muscles won’t join back together like they’re supposed to, which could leave you or your child open to suffering from this type of hernia. This condition develops in adults because of an undue amount of pressure in the abdomen. Some of the main causes of pressure on the abdomen include a previous surgery in the area, multiple pregnancies, obesity, and peritoneal dialysis for the treatment of kidney failure. Risk factors among babies include being born at a low weight or being born prematurely.

Treatment Methods for Umbilical Hernias

When a baby experiences an umbilical hernia, it’s likely that this hernia will close on its own within a couple of years. A doctor may also be able to push the hernia gently into place. Surgery can be administered to children suffering from an umbilical hernia if the hernia is particularly large or has yet to disappear by the age of four. Among adults, surgery is the most common treatment method to ensure that additional complications are avoided.
